All Natural Home Journal :: The Twinery and My Little Shoebox Blog Hop

Hellllo to you – and Happy Monday! Thank you for dropping by! Hopefully you just arrived from Jennifer’s Blog, but if you didn’t, just head back to the My Little Shoebox Blog to start this party off right! There are lots of goodies up for grabs, so you definitely don’t want to miss your chance!

I Love, LOVE, l.o.v.e. My Little Shoebox. And the Twinery, of course, but that goes without saying. My Little Shoebox always has the cutest patterns and the quality of the paper is very nice – not too thick, but definitely not super thin. So, I was SO excited to get to play with their “Lovely Day” collection for this hop! There were literally tons of elements to choose from, but since my project is for practical use, you’ll see how I used up each side of the paper along with a few key embellishments to bring this project to life. So you ready? OK, me too!

I have taken the last few weeks to really start evaluating our family budget. What are we spending our money on? Is it something that can be minimized or even replaced? Enter homemade household cleansers. In just a few weeks to a month, I’ve created my own laundry soap, my own wood polish, my own face creams, scrubs, and hey, I even made bar soap! The money I’m saving is CRAZY just when you compare the laundry soap alone! It is literally pennies to wash 4 loads of laundry – and because my kiddos have sensitive skin, I need to be mindful of what exactly is going into my soap. So, I’m diggin’ the all-natural bit. I’m only using essential oils, by the way. Fragrance oils may irritate skin. Ok, so now that I’ve become this home-making Maven, I really needed a journal to jot down all my notes and concoctions. The MLS “Lovely Day” collection was PERFECT! Flowers, cheery colors, and coordinating stickers sold me on this idea. So here we go! (You can click on some of the photos to make them larger.)

I accented the front of my book with some gorgeous “Shore” and “Buttercream” twine. These colors matched SO well with this line that I really didn’t use any other twine colors throughout the book. Eeks….that buttercream twine was on there straight – it is only meant for keeping the book’s pages together when not in use so it slides off and on like a band. I used my Cinch for the first time and made a few boo boos – but that’s ok, it’s just for my use only. My advice? Read the directions thoroughly before using. Yeah, I know, you’d think I would have thought of that before chomping into my project! :\

After covering two 8.5 x 11″ pieces of chipboard with various papers and embellishments, I used Gloss Mod Podge to seal it. You don’t have to do this, but since I know I’ll be using this book in my kitchen, it offers the slightest bit of waterproofing (yes, just slight…you don’t want to take this thing pool-side!). As you can see in the photo above, I’ve just started jotting down a few recipes that I’ve made more than once so far. I have blank pages inside to house the future “tried-and-true” recipes I will create.

This page will be the start of a section containing photographs of my cold-process soap recipes. I will probably need an entire book dedicated to just bar soaps, but for now, this will work! :)

The beginning of my Aromatherapy Chart. Again, I could probably have an entire notebook dedicated to different combos and benefits, but this is a great starter list! I added that fun cardstock sticker to the side of a printed page I created in Illustrator.

Thanks so much for stopping by – I was as brief as possible because this is a blog hop, after all, but I would LOVE for you to click “Follow this Blog” on the Networked Blogs widget on the right side bar if you’d love to hear more about my foray into soap-making and living more sustainably. I know it’s something everyone’s talking about, but the truth of the matter is that it is so important, now more than ever, to re-evaluate where our waste lies. We can make easy (and FUN!) adjustments so our kids and grandkids can enjoy the fresh air and nature around them. If you’re like, “Heck yeah, let’s DO THIS THING!”, pick up a copy of “The Naturally Clean Home” by Karyn Siegel-Maier. It was literally no more than $9.00 at the bookstore and I have already saved well over 10x that much in restocking my cleaning cabinet- HOLLLLLAA!

p.s. You should also know that the Twinery and MLS are giving away some super awesome prizes like this YUMMY twine package below (valued at $48.00!) as well as some goodies from My Little Shoebox. All you need to do is leave a comment on the design team blogs by June 24th @ 11:59 pm EDT. EASY!
