Good Morning everyone! Welcome to the “Think Spring” blog hop hosted by the sweet Jessica and her friend and fellow blogger, Nancy! If you’ve just popped over here from Jessica @ Denim Glitter Creations, then you are right where you should be.
If not, don’t worry, I’ll have the full list posted at the end of this entry so you can start from the very beginning. I can’t wait to show you what I’ve created for you today!
My favorite season is autumn, but I love what comes after the Spring best. Spring is the quintessential symbol of renewal, hope, and growth. When all the snow melts, and perennials start poking out from the thawed Earth, that is a joyous sight to see. I don’t even complain when the birds fly home from their winter vacations and start chirping outside my window at 6 a.m. It just means warmer weather is near.
Speaking of growth, I have been thinking a lot lately about how to grow as an artist, but further more, just as a person. I’ve been trying to think of all the things that my creative spirit is looking for, and one of the things I have wanted to do for awhile is more mixed media art. So, I dug out the palette of water colors my mom gave me a few months back, and got to work. What I found was a whole new world of exciting possibilities. I made about 10 tags last night, but I have my two favorites to show you today.
My manilla tag was first stamped with my Bit of Burlap background stamp in London Fog Memento Ink. Then I did a wash of yellow watercolor and Spun Sugar Distress Stain. You can’t see it, but I also spritzed the entire tag with Pearl Glimmer Mist {so pretty in person!}. This bird was stamped first onto Natural Sticky Back Canvas by Claudine Hellmuth {LOVE this stuff!!}. I stamped my bird in Versafine (Onyx Black) and touched in areas with a bright blue and pink. I accented the eyes with yellow and the beak in orange. I then did an all-over grey wash and went back in with some yellow and accented the edges with Spun Sugar Distress Stain. The sentiment is from Springtime Minis by Peachy Keen Stamps {they are having a ONE day sale today!!!}.
Don’t you just love that bright, cheery twine? I used Pink Sorbet, Lemondrop, and Blossom, all from The Twinery.
This tag was layered with Broken China and Peeled Paint Distress Stains, then sponged with Frayed Burlap Distress Ink around the edges. I like the really vintage look – it almost looks like some sort of chemical reaction took place. The birds’ nest stamp was also stamped in Versafine (Onyx Black) and I touched in a yellow-brown and darker brown for the nest. The robin’s eggs were painted with the same blues as the bird, just a little more aqua was used to make that true “Robin’s Egg Blue”.
I added in some Rustic Twine from Papertrey Ink to bring out the natural feel of the canvas and portray the birds’ nest a bit. I sponged the edges of my circle (both were cut with Spellbinders’ Nestabilities) with Frayed Burlap Distress Ink as well.
These were SO fun to make and honestly, not really difficult at all. The Distress Stains are awesome for tags because in one swoop, you get a full, transparent wash of color, but you can layer in more colors or simply layer the same color over again.

Wow you did a great job painting these, I like the old vintage look. thanks for sharing.
How TRULY lovely your watercolored tags are. I absolutely love the think spring bird’s nest with the twine wrapped around it, in particular. I am a watercolorist from waaaaaay back (dark ages!) but haven’t touched a brush since picking up and focusing non my papercrafting. You’ve shown me that I can combine these two media with a beautiful outcome. Thank you! Lovely!!!
…and I am DELIGHTED to have won your PKS Duck Dolls stamp set. I’ve sent you a private message with my postal information. Again, THANK YOU!!!
